Position Description:
A fixed-term, full-time 6 month opportunity exists for an individual who is fully deck certified in aquatics to promote and maintain safe and enjoyable recreational, swim lesson and waterfit programs at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex and Moses Springer pools. As a member of the Aquatics Team, the incumbent demonstrates support for the corporate values and participates as requested in providing leadership and direction to the Section, and the Division.
Accountabilities:
• Ensure effective pool deck delivery of aquatic programs and services
• Plan, instruct, evaluate, and document results for aquatic swim lesson participants
• Instruct a variety of waterfit classes including the mentoring of new waterfit instructors
• Apply lifeguard standards and superior customer service skills when guarding
• Plan and implement fun days, special events, aquatic based land programs and daytime leadership courses
• Perform opening/closing procedures for pool as required
• Provide support, training and direction to part-time staff as required
• Assist in skill screening program for recruitment, selection, orientation, and development of aquatics staff
• Support the process for payroll/timesheet submission and authorization for aquatics staff
• Statistical analysis of progams and inputting results daily
• Use various computer applications including Active Net to assist in administration of programs and services
• Ensure that all relevant employment and workplace legislated standards are met
• Demonstrate creativity, skill development and remain current with leading practices and procedures within the field
• Support aquatic meetings, trainings and attend other corporate meetings as required
• Ensure that own work is performed in a safe manner according to health and safety guidelines and procedures
• Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
• Minimum two (2) years of experience in an Instructor Guard role, previous experience in a Head Instructor role is considered an asset.
• High School Diploma is required, post-secondary diploma in Recreation and Leisure is preferred.
• Must hold the following current qualifications: LSS Instructors & Swim Instructors; NL, Standard First Aid/CPR C. Additional advanced qualifications will be considered an asset.
• Must be competent in instructing both Deep and Shallow Waterfit classes.
• CALA and/or Water Art certification would be considered an asset.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with internal and external customers.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently as required.
• Strong commitment to providing quality customer service and supporting teamwork.
• Strong organizational skills to deal with fluctuating volumes and pace of work.
• Ability to assess, diffuse or take appropriate action when dealing with difficult/challenging situations.
• Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook; proficiency in Active Net would be an asset.
• A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check will be required as a condition of hire.
• Proof of current swim certifications will be required as a condition of hire.
Applicants’ aquatic skills must meet the City of Waterloo deck standards and will be screened as part of the recruitment process.
*Hours of Work: 35 hours/week typically scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. with flexibility to support staff training and skills’ screenings sessions offered evenings and weekends. Equivalent time off during weekdays will be granted on a 1:1 ratio for hours worked evenings and weekends.
