City of Waterloo Crossing Guard Testimonials:

“Being a school crossing guard has been an unexpected pleasure in many ways.  My wife and I decided to do it to give us some added income in retirement and found that the added benefits were most certainly the children we got to meet every day as they both entertain and enrich our lives. Not only does it give us a sense of purpose everyday but it gives back to the community we live in.

Additional benefits are receiving 40 passes each a year for the Waterloo Recreation Centre where we go weekly to aquafit classes and the number of days off a year, for example all statutory days,2 weeks at Christmas, a week for March break as well as all the PA days which gives good flexibility for our other interests.

In short our association with a good group of people and a great employer ensures our needs on the job, and we get paid for two hours a day. I recommend it to anyone. “

- B.H., Crossing Guard Since 2011

“We are told the first person a child sees when arriving at school is the Crossing Guard. A trust is developed with the children and parents….They love their crossing guard...The children are polite, saying good morning, thank you and they always look to you to get them across the street safely… The children give our day a great start and finish.”

- G.A., Crossing Guard since 2009

"For me being a crossing guard is totally about the children. They are like a breath of fresh air.  It can make you laugh or cry but most often you go home with a lot of joy in your heart and your spirit uplifted... it is a chance to effect a child's life in a positive way. You are the first person the child meets in the morning so besides keeping them safe you have a chance to make their day start out right with a message of positivity and and a good dose of high self esteem. I would not have passed on being a crossing guard as the personal rewards are high. It was the best job I ever had in my forty-five years of working."

- J.R.,Crossing Guard since 2006

"Being a School Crossing Guard offers the opportunity to stay active in the community.  It is also a great way to earn some extra money while meeting new people."
